The Bank of Russia informs about the registration of the format for presenting Russian bank details in accordance with the ISO 13616 international standard "International Bank Account Number" (IBAN).
The international standard ISO 13616 is designed to unify the presentation of bank details of various countries and is used in Belarus, Kazakhstan and other 80 countries of the world. The current list of countries that have registered the format for presenting national bank details is available on the official website of the standard www.iso13616.org.
The format for presenting Russian bank details in accordance with the ISO 13616 international standard is applied from April 1, 2023, its description is given in the Appendix to this letter.
The Bank of Russia recommends that credit institutions use this format when providing clients with their bank details in accordance with the ISO 13616 international standard for cross-border transfers. Credit institutions can use bank details provided in accordance with the ISO 13616 international standard for cross-border settlements in accordance with the rules adopted in international banking practice.

Format of Presentation of Russian Bank Details in Accordance with ISO 13616 (IBAN)
In accordance with ISO 13616 (IBAN, International Bank Account Number), the format for presenting bank details consists of the following mandatory characters:
- a country code (two characters using ISO 3166);
- check digits (2 digits, calculated according to the mod-97 algorithm described in ISO 7064);
- national bank identifier;
- national bank account number.
Since the national bank identifiers and bank account numbers in each country have their own formats and sizes, the IBAN can have a different length but no more than 34 characters. Collectively, the national bank identifier and bank account number are referred to as BBAN (Basic Bank Account Number) within the ISO 13616 standard.
The format for presenting Russian bank details in accordance with ISO 13616 (IBAN) will be as follows:
- country code = RU;
- check digit (key), 2 digits;
- national bank identifier = Russian Central Bank Identifier Code, 9 digits;
- national bank account number = Russian bank account number, its the IBAN format is specified as 5 digits + 15 characters, taking into account the potential use of letters, for example, in the currency code.
Example:
Bank account number 40817810538091310419 opened in a credit institution with RCBIC 044525225, using the ISO 13616 (IBAN) standard will be presented as RU04452522540817810538091310419 (where KK is the check digit).
Key calculation in the IBAN shall be carried out in the following procedure:
- the key is initially assumed to be 00;
- country code (2 letters - RU) and a check digit (2 digits - 00) move to the end of the string;
- if there are letters in the IBAN, each letter shall be replaced with two digits according to the table 1:

- calculate the remainder of the number obtained from the IBAN as a result of the previous paragraphs on division by 97;
- the key value shall be taken equal to the difference between 98 and the remainder determined at the previous step, and if this difference is less than 10, "0" is indicated in front of it.
Validation of the key is as follows:
- country code (2 letters - RU) and a check digit (2 digits - 00) move to the end of the string;
- if there are letters in the IBAN, each letter shall be replaced with two digits according to the table 1;
- calculate the remainder of the number obtained from the IBAN as a result of the previous paragraphs on division by 97;
- if this remainder is 1, the check digit test is passed and might be valid.
